Modern Eco-Treehouse

If you are toying with the idea of buying a playhouse or treehouse for Christmas this year, here is an exceptional one the whole family would enjoy–and maybe even move into.  I’m not sure it’s in the budget this year, but I am sure our Godson, Cole, would think we were pretty amazing if we put a big red bow around this in his backyard!

Germany’s treehouse makers, Baumraum, have created a brilliant arboreal home design.  Impressive, with its curvy body perched atop super-skinny spider-like “legs”, the unique and modern shape with its clean lines and cool features are signature Baumraum.

It was conceived to show off housing company, WeberHaus’, homes, and resides in a fun interacting way at World of Living , their showspace/amusement park for sustainable housing. As if the treehouse itself were not cool enough, there is also a terrace and stairs spiraling the oak, suspended by a steel cable and heavy-duty webbing belts.

WeberHaus has been self-build specialists for more than 50 years, with much experience in energy- efficient and sustainable homes.

Modern society increasingly demands more sustainable environmentally-friendly homes.
Through the use of geothermics and thermal insulation, energy efficiency and lower energy costs are all part of the self-build homes. These ultimate eco homes are tailor-made with bespoke timber frame panels and built entirely to meet your specifications and requirements. You dream-–they build, with focus on quality, innovation, and the environment.

The vaulted interior deceives visitors with wallpaper depicting giant oak leaves as if the house itself were a tree. In fact, the walls are all made of native oak.  Two skylights and large windows daylight the space and allow views in all directions over the park and into the tree crown.

The treehouse was built in the company’s apprentice workshop in collaboration with external partners.  It was then put on a truck and carted to its destination.

Thanksgiving Tree Ritual-Natural Art

Gathering for a big feast with our friends and family for Thanksgiving is a favorite in our home.  When I saw that our house was going to be the usual gathering place for this day, I wanted to incorporate a ritual to accompany the festivity that brings friends and family together to celebrate.  With cheers and madness combined,  I could see through the chaos of kids and cocktails and gravy- making that going around the table to say our individual graces was not going to be something that happened in my house.  So..I came up with a  Thanksgiving Tree.   This way our graces could become a collaborative piece of natural art that would stay up through the New Year.

Will the Royal Wedding Dress be Sustainable?

Will the Royal wedding be sustainable?  With projections of 30 million dollars being thrown around for the occasion,  I highly doubt it.  So with that aside,  let’s take a look at who may be the designer selected for the Royal Gown…

The navy blue cinched-waist silk jersey dress Kate Middleton wore to perfectly complement her sapphire ring  at yesterday’s press conference was a creation by Daniella Halayel.  Although Halayel is Brazilian, her line Issa is based out of London and the buzz seems to be that this will be her choice for the Big Event as well. Tamara’s Gorgeous & Sustainable Hawaiian Wedding

Small destination weddings are something to consider if you desire to be more sustainable  with your event.  Five Years Ago today, we did just that when John and Gregg pulled together a “shotgun wedding” for me and my husband, Sam.  Although we felt our commitment from the day we met, we decided to make it a more formal union when we found out we were expecting a child. Our desire had been  to keep it simple and just elope, but John and Gregg , with their love for design and special events, had something else in mind.  So, they jumped on the occasion to help us make our union a special event, no matter how simple our expectations had been.

Knowing  our love for the tropics and travel,  and with simplicity in mind, John made a list ; and,  within the day,  we were receiving faxes and signing on the dotted line to set a date to be married on a private beach in front of their home. This was a special place for me as it was one of the first start- to- finish projects I did with them…and went on to help style  a  photo shoot with Durston Saylor and Architectural Digest.

Unique Architecture Solar-Powered Gym

French Architect,  Jean Marc Rivet recently completed an amazing  new gym in Saint Gilles, France. The building sits atop an angular base consisting of photovoltaic panels.  During the day the gym receives sunlight through its main window and at night it is powered by the panels.

A savvy sense of design  incorporates a rooftop garden to insulate the interiors and a large window  lets in sunlight to conserve energy required from artificial lighting. The green facility’s photovoltaic panels  generate renewable electricity for nighttime illumination.

Living on a Yacht: A Mobile Ocean Front Home

In the era of beach houses and multiple homes, a vacation getaway was not only a fun thing to have, but a viable investment.  Now, however, with challenging markets,  many of us multiple residence owners can  feel tied down and stuck at times.  When those  who are inveterate adventurers start  feeling ‘trapped’ what do they want to do?  Escape!  So began our  journey into the world of boating and the realization that there is a new breed of boater out there in the world: one that views a boat or yacht as a home, not just as a recreational activity.
Both John and I had an amazing weekend on a Grand Banks 57 on Santa Cruz island about two and a half years ago; we had won the trip at a Heal the Ocean auction.   Paul and Dawn Noury own Le Grand Bleu  yacht charters, http://www.santabarbarayachtcharters.com/, and we had such an amazing time on their boat, that we started thinking…’Hmmmm, this is not a bad lifestyle, come to think of it, and a mobile oceanfront home is not a bad idea’.
See: SantaBarbaradiggs.com for a great article about Paul and Dawn. Continue Reading…
